| YouTube Thumbnail | 1280×720 | Video preview |
| Instagram Square | 1080×1080 | Regular posts |
| Instagram Story | 1080×1920 | Stories & Reels |
| Twitter/X Header | 1500×500 | Profile banner |
| WhatsApp Profile | 500×500 | Profile picture |
Why Size Matters
Platforms automatically crop and scale images. If your image is the wrong size, you lose key content or look unprofessional.
Resize vs Crop: Which One to Use
Scaling shrinks the whole image — use it when the photo already has the right shape and you only need fewer pixels. Cropping cuts the outer area to reach the target ratio — use it when the platform's shape differs from yours (a landscape photo into a square Instagram post, for example).
The practical rule: match the aspect ratio first by cropping, then scale down to the exact pixel dimensions. Doing it the other way round forces the platform to crop for you, and its automated crop usually cuts the wrong part.
Watch the Safe Zones
Every platform protects a different area of the image. Profile pictures are masked into circles, stories get covered by the clock and action buttons at the top, and thumbnails have the duration badge in the corner. When you compose the image, keep faces and text inside the middle 80% and away from the edges — that survives every crop the platform applies.
File Size and Upload Behaviour
Even a perfectly sized image can be ruined by upload limits. Social platforms recompress whatever you send, and a heavy source file gets crushed harder: what was a clean photo becomes blotchy. Keep uploads in the low hundreds of kilobytes — resize to the exact target dimensions first, then export at 80% quality. The platform's recompression then has less work to do and the result looks noticeably cleaner.
Formats matter too: JPG for photographs, PNG when the graphic has sharp text or transparency, and WebP wherever it is accepted.
A Repeatable Workflow
- Crop to the platform's aspect ratio
- Resize to the exact pixel dimensions from the table above
- Export at 80% quality (PNG for graphics with text)
- Check the file size — a few hundred KB is plenty
- Upload the finished file, never the original
