Compress Images for WhatsApp (Free, No Upload)
WhatsApp already compresses image files it forwards — but usually too aggressively. Compress once yourself, right, and what the receiver sees is the version you intended, delivered fast and clear.

A 5MB phone photo hits WhatsApp's own compressor and comes out soft. Send a crisp 200-400KB version instead and the app passes it through nearly untouched — sharper result, instant delivery, less data.
The right settings for WhatsApp
- Open the Compress Image tool.
- Upload the photo.
- Set quality to about 75% and watch the size land between 150KB and 400KB.
- Download and share in chat.
For documents and screenshots, PNG works better: flat text stays readable at high compression.
Total privacy for sensitive chats
Compression runs in your browser. Private family photos or work documents never leave your phone — exactly the guarantee you want before sending anything through a chat app.
The WhatsApp image pipeline, measured
WhatsApp applies its own processing to every photo: EXIF stripped, longest side capped at 1600 pixels, quality re-encoded (historically around 70%). The consequence is predictable - the file you carefully prepared and the file the recipient opens are never identical, and forwarding the message again adds another lossy generation.
The winning strategy is to pre-compress to a size where WhatsApp's re-encode has little left to destroy. Targets that work in practice: 200-300KB for a photo message, under 100KB for a batch of screenshots you want to travel on mobile data. Resize to 1600px longest side yourself first, so the app does not choose the downscale filter for you. For documents and text-heavy images, send as a document attachment instead - it bypasses the photo pipeline completely and arrives byte-identical.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size should WhatsApp images be?
Around 1600px wide and 200-400KB balances sharpness on HD phones and covers most screens. WhatsApp HD mode is available for higher resolution when needed.
Does WhatsApp compress images again?
Standard photos are re-encoded, but once under the app's threshold the re-compression is light. HD mode keeps almost all quality.
How do I stop WhatsApp from compressing my photos?
Send them as documents (paperclip icon) instead of photos — chat files are not re-compressed.
