A typical photo saved as PNG is 3-6× larger than the same photo as JPG. On photos you don't need transparency — so JPG gives you smaller files for identical visual quality.
How to convert for free in browser
- Open the Convert Image tool.
- Drop your PNG.
- Select JPG as the output format.
- Optional: lower quality to 80% for an even smaller file.
- Download.
The conversion is lossy-compressed — perfect for photos. For logos and icons, keep PNG.
Compress as you convert
Conversion to JPG usually cuts file size by 60-80% on photos. For file-size-first workflows, pair this with the [Compress Image](/tools/compress-image) tool to hit a precise target like 200KB or 300KB.
Converting PNG to JPG without surprises
The single thing that catches people out: JPG has no alpha channel. A PNG with transparency becomes a solid background (usually white or black) the moment it converts - there is no partial state. Check whether your PNG uses transparency before converting; if it does, keep PNG, use WebP, or flatten deliberately onto a chosen background color.
For everything else, PNG to JPG is a clean win on size: photographic PNGs commonly shrink to a quarter or less. Choose quality deliberately - 90% is visually transparent for photos, 80% is the pragmatic web setting, and below 70% ringing appears around sharp edges. Screenshots with text are the exception: lossy compression softens lettering, so if the file is a screenshot rather than a photo, PNG or WebP will serve readers better than JPG.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does PNG to JPG lose quality?
JPG is lossy, but at 85-90% quality the difference is invisible on screen. Avoid JPG for logos, text screenshots and graphics with thin lines.
What happens to transparency?
Transparent PNG areas become white (or checkered background in some editors). Convert to JPG only when your image doesn't rely on transparency.
Why is my JPG so much smaller than the PNG?
JPG compresses photos with perceptual encoding, discarding invisible detail. 60-80% size reduction is normal for photographic content.
