Resize an Image for a Profile Picture

Every platform crops your profile picture to a square. Sending a perfectly square 400×400 or 500×500 image means no surprise cropping — and you can do it all in your browser with our free tool.

Why every profile picture needs a square

Instagram, X, Facebook, Discord and Slack all display avatars in 1:1 frames. A square export is predictable: your face stays centred and the platform cannot cut your head off.

Make a profile picture in two steps

  1. Open the Resize Image tool.
  2. Enter an identical width and height (400, 500 or 1000).
  3. Choose center-crop and download.

500×500 is the safe modern standard; some networks keep higher-resolution renders of the original.

Private but still distinct

Your avatar is your face to the world — and processing it entirely on your device is the closest thing to keeping it yours. No account, no watermark, no queue.

Profile picture sizing rules per platform

Each network crops uploads differently, and the difference is not cosmetic. Instagram and TikTok want a square 1080x1080 source because they display a circle; LinkedIn shows a 400x400 circle but accepts 400x400 at 2x for sharp screens; X/Twitter crops the center of whatever you give it into a circle, so a face placed high in the frame ends up cut off. The safe pattern everywhere: start from a square, put the face in the middle third, and export at the exact pixel size listed in this guide.

Two details decide how the picture finally looks. First, cropping tolerance - circular crops eat the corners, so never place text there. Second, recompression: platforms shrink whatever you upload and add their own artifacts, so export a clean PNG or a high-quality JPG once instead of repeatedly re-saving. If your source photo is huge, resize it to the target size first; letting the platform downscale a 4000px photo produces softer detail than a properly pre-sized export.

Frequently Asked Questions

What resolution should a profile picture be?

500×500 satisfies every major platform; 1000×1000 adds headroom for future display sizes.

Why is my profile picture blurry?

You uploaded a small source. Upscaling never adds detail — start from a photo that is already at or above your target size.

Should I use PNG or JPG?

JPG for photos, PNG for logos with transparency. Both are accepted everywhere.
