16:9 everywhere

YouTube thumbnails and video, Twitch banners, Vimeo covers, slides and most modern video players use 16:9. Cropping in advance means no odd black bars or surprise crops when the platform resizes.

How to crop to 16:9

  1. Open the [Crop Image tool](/tools/crop-image).
  2. Drop your image.
  3. Select the 16:9 preset — the crop frame locks to widescreen.
  4. Drag horizontally to choose which part of the scene stays.
  5. Download.

For wild aspect ratios of the source, sweep the frame across to pick the strongest section.

Best export settings

For a thumbnail, export at quality 80-85% and resize to 1280×720 with [Resize Image](/tools/resize-image). For a banner, keep the full 16:9 width and compress with [Compress Image](/tools/compress-image) to stay fast-loading.

Where the 16:9 ratio actually appears

16:9 is the default shape of modern video and screens: YouTube thumbnails, video players, slide decks, widescreen TV and virtually every monitor since 2010. Using the same ratio for static images means a picture exported at 16:9 drops into any of those contexts without bars or surprise crops - the main reason it is the most requested ratio after square.

Cropping to 16:9 removes a lot of height: from a 4:3 original you lose about 25% of the frame, and from a portrait photo nearly half. Before confirming, check what sits in the discarded bands - horizon lines and faces usually need to be repositioned, not just cut around. For YouTube specifically, keep the composition readable at 320x180 pixels, the size thumbnails actually appear in recommendation grids, and leave the lower-right corner clear since the duration badge covers it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard 16:9 thumbnail size?

1280×720 pixels is the classic YouTube thumbnail. Crop to 16:9, then resize to those exact pixels.

Can I crop 16:9 from a portrait photo?

Yes — but you'll keep only a wide slice of the vertical image. Position the frame over the most important area.

Should 16:9 crops use JPG or PNG?

JPG at 80-85% quality is best for thumbnails and video covers — small and universally supported.
