Single-file HTML prototypes, CSS background icons, email logos that must never break, and JSON payloads for APIs that cannot accept file uploads. This is the standard trick of designers and developers.
How to convert an image to Base64
- Open the Image to Base64 tool.
- Upload any image.
- Click Convert to Base64.
- Copy the data URI or download a .txt file.
When NOT to use Base64
Base64 adds about 33% of overhead. Never embed 5MB photos — only small icons, logos and thumbnails. Keep images under ~50–100KB for embedding.
When inline Base64 actually helps - and when it does not
Encoding an image as a data URI makes sense for small, critical assets: a logo, an icon, a placeholder, a mailer pixel, anything under roughly 4-8KB that would otherwise cost an extra HTTP request on first paint. Inlining it removes a round trip to the server, which speeds up the first render on slow networks and guarantees the asset renders even if a CDN is down.
Above that size the trade-off flips. Base64 expands binary data by about 33%, the encoded string cannot be cached separately, and it inflates the HTML (or CSS) file that contained it, delaying everything else in that document. The practical pattern is: inline the tiny icons, keep everything else as normal files. Also check your delivery path - if a proxy or CMS strips data URIs from the markup, the image silently disappears, so verify the rendered page once after switching.
