Shopify recommends 2048px or larger images so the zoom (plus/minus) shows real detail, and square-aspect product photos for consistent grids. File size matters for page speed, so compress after resizing.

Steps for a product photo

1. Open the Resize Image tool.
2. Drop in your product shot.
3. Set the longest side to 2048 — say 2048×2048 for square product images.
4. Export and compress under ~800KB.

Banners and hero images

Most themes use banners around 1920×1080 or narrower. Prepare hero images with the same tool and keep text clear of the theme's overlay gradients.

Shopify image sizes that avoid the default crop

Shopify's theme system crops aggressively: product images are displayed in a 1:1 square on most themes even though the admin accepts any ratio, and the collection grid applies the same square mask. Uploading a portrait product photo therefore loses its top and bottom in the storefront while looking correct in the admin - the classic surprise when a listing goes live.

The reliable setup: export product photos at 2048x2048 square for the main gallery, keep the product centered with margin, and use the extra slots for lifestyle and detail shots. The recommended product file is 4472x4472 or less on the longest side and under 4472 pixels in any dimension per Shopify's own limits, but 2000-2048px is the practical sweet spot between sharpness and upload time.
