Why the number in KB actually matters
File size is a budget. Too big = rejected uploads, slow pages, expensive bandwidth. Too small (for the wrong format) = blocky mess. The trick is matching the budget to the purpose:
- Under 20KB: avatars, favicons, forum signatures, email-safe logos
- Under 50KB: small thumbnails, comment images, WhatsApp previews
- Under 100KB: typical CMS content images thumbnail tier
- Under 200KB: the sweet spot for most blog and store images
- Under 300-500KB: high-detail product photos, portfolios
- Under 1MB: full-resolution sharing, documents, print-prep
The formula that always works
- Resize first how many pixels you actually need. A 4000px phone photo at 100KB looks terrible; the same photo at 1200px and 80% looks great at 100KB.
- Export the right format — WebP for websites, JPG for photos, PNG only when you need transparency.
- Set the quality to the tier — 70-80% for most, 50-60% when you must reach the very small tiers.
