Which format should you pick?

Transparency survives WebP

Choosing the right output format every time

The format should follow the content, not habit. Photographs and gradients belong in JPG or WebP: both discard detail the eye misses and shrink files dramatically. Screenshots, logos, diagrams and any image with transparency belong in PNG or WebP, because the lossless buffer keeps thin lines and text crisp. If you are unsure, WebP with transparency is the modern default - it covers both cases in a single file.

After converting, check three things before publishing: open the file at 100% zoom and inspect text edges for blur, confirm transparency survived if the source had an alpha channel, and compare the file size against the original - a conversion that makes the file larger usually means the wrong format was chosen. Keep one master copy of every asset in its original format so future conversions start from clean pixels instead of an already-lossy export.
