Extracting images from a PDF, page by page
PDFs store pages either as vector drawings or as embedded raster images, and both respond well to raster export: each page becomes one JPG at the resolution you choose. Typical resolutions that map cleanly to real needs - 96 DPI for screen reading, 150 DPI for casual printing, 300 DPI for archival or print-shop quality.
Practical output numbers: a text-heavy A4 page at 150 DPI lands around 1500x2100 pixels and 200-400KB as JPG; at 300 DPI expect roughly 2400x3500 and 500KB-1MB. For a document you will only read on screen, the middle setting is the sweet spot - sharp enough to zoom into footnotes without ballooning the file. Note what JPG does to line art and small type: if the source is mostly vector text and you need pixel-perfect legibility at any zoom, PNG or a direct text extraction serves better than rasterizing.
