A complete favicon set touches five distinct slots: 16x16 (browser tab), 32x32 (Windows taskbar pin and macOS Retina tabs), 48x48 (legacy shortcuts), 180x180 (iOS home screen via apple-touch-icon), 192x192 and 512x512 (Android/Chrome install prompts and PWA splash), plus 150x150 for Windows tiles. Serving only a 16px PNG means every Retina tab shows a blurry upscale of the smallest asset.
The modern delivery is a single SVG favicon for browsers that support it (all current ones do) plus PNG fallbacks at 32 and 180 - three files cover every slot.
