How to remove a photo background

For best results use a photo where the subject is clearly lit and separated from the background. Busy or low-contrast shots still work, but may need a retry or slight zoom on the subject.

Getting clean edges: input quality checklist

Background removal quality is decided before the tool ever runs, by what the model can see. The checklist that consistently produces clean cutouts: the subject must contrast with its background (a white product on a white wall defeats every algorithm), the edges must be in focus (motion blur reads as background), and the whole subject must be inside the frame (a cropped elbow or wheel cannot be reconstructed).

Hair and semi-transparent edges are where models earn their reputation - modern on-device models handle individual strands reasonably well, but fine hair against a similarly-colored background will always be the hardest case. When an edge comes out rough, the fix is rarely re-running the same image: change the lighting (re-shoot with side light), simplify the background, or crop tighter so the subject fills more of the frame. One clean source beats five retries on a poor one.
